Dick Menard, second oldest of the four Menard boys, started racing in 1960 with his 1955 Chevy convertible. The race car began with a 265 small block then was upgraded to a 1957 dual-quad 283 Corvette engine. The Chevy ran in the low 15s.
In 1964, the Menard brothers started running the 1957 Chevy with Paul driving and Dick as the crew chief, known then as the "boss wrench". Others on the crew were Paul Nedoroscik (Chicken), Ed Coutermanche (Scratch), Jim Landry, Charlie Orphan, Steve Misakian (Mizzy), Frank Castiglioni (Money in the Bank Frank), Mike Couture (Rag Picker), and Dennis Menard. The '57 was powered by a 283 small block and was raced in G Stock Automatic. After a transmission change, they raced in E Stock. Then with a 396 Chevy big block, the crew raced the '57 in Modified Production. The normally-aspirated engine was changed to Hillborn injection and eventually Crower injection. After cutting off the front end and putting in a straight axle, the car was raced in C Gas, also known as Altered. The team traveled around the northeast racing and winning at tracks such as New England Dragway NH, Lebanon Valley Dragway NY, Long Island Dragway NY, Connecticut Dragway, Sanford Dragway ME, and Orange Airport MA.
In 1972 the race team's sponsor, United Movers, purchased a brand new Chevy Nova from the local dealer. Dick built the race chassis with stainless steel seamless tubing. All the sheet metal work was done by Leo Guertin, uncle to the Menard Bros. The Nova was powered by a 427 big block and was raced in Pro Stock, running in the low 10s. The man behind the wheel was Steve (Mizzy) Misakian.
